Chapter Five

“I’ve got water, sandwiches and granola bars.” Scott stood with his hands on hips, surveying the area. “The camp looks secure so I think we’re good to go.”

I finished lacing my boots as I spoke. “I love that my paintball kicks work for camping too.” I stood and gave him thumbs up. “Ready.”

“Did you pack a jacket like I told you? It’ll get chilly in the late afternoon.” He slid his sunglasses in place.

“Of course.”

“Then let’s do it to it.”

“It gives me a thrill when you do your macho man talk.” I muttered trailing behind him.

“Then I’ll do it more often.” With long strides he took the path we’d followed to the river yesterday, but after about ten minutes cut to the right taking a second trail. “This is listed as a moderate hike. It’s about nine miles and it should hook up with the Shortcut Canyon trail a little further on.”

“Okay.” I stretched my legs to keep up with him, noticing the wind was stronger than it had been yesterday. The cool breeze swirled around us blowing dust and sand into our faces. “I should have brought a kite,” I said, spitting dirt from my mouth.

“Yeah. Hopefully the wind will die down. But it could go either way,” he said ominously.

The road was uneven and lined with chaparral and yucca. It also offered almost zero shade, which wasn’t so bad on the part we were on at the moment because it was downhill. But glancing at the steep slope behind us I knew the heat of the sun might become a factor on our return. As we headed downward the bushes and trees seemed to grow thicker and provide a tiny bit more cover from the sun and wind. There were some fallen pines, and aspens across the road but we didn’t have too hard of a time getting past them. After what felt like several miles we reached what appeared to be the canyon floor. A small stream cascaded into a pond near us, and then continued down the canyon as far as I could see.

“It doesn’t look like anyone’s hiked this path in a while.” Scott pointed to some muddy footprints on the bank of the stream. “Those look about a week old.”

“You did say it’s off season.”

The riverbed was rocky and choked with cottonwood trees along the bank. Large boulders formed a stone bridge across the swirling water, and I carefully followed Scott to the other side. Jumping onto the firm ground, I gave a sigh of relief. If I’d fallen in, it wasn’t dangerous in any way because it was shallow, but I’d have been soaked.

He squeezed my shoulder. “How are you holding up?”

I inhaled the fresh air and realized I felt invigorated. “Great.” It was nice to get the blood flowing through my muscles.

Scott’s face lit with pleasure. “See, told you it wasn’t all bad out here.”

“So far it’s been a thousand times better than expected.”

“Do you want to take a break?” He scrambled up the slope and crouched on a large rock over the river’s edge.
